When I was a kid we would all travel to my Grandparent’s and have a holiday weekend for Thanksgiving. Grandma would cook and bake for days before we got there and then the infamous turkey in the middle of the night. Everyone dressed up and we had a big feast, talked, fought and enjoyed family. My favorite were mashed potatoes, pie and Charlie Brown. As a kid I didn’t realize of course that these scenes in my memory would ever be distant, somewhat idealized or something very foreign to others. I was an adult before I knew that others didn’t have family gatherings like my own for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sometimes I am sad that these days are far gone mainly because my daughter was not able to see and experience them.

Over the years as a young person I appreciated this daily mainly to have a day off from work, visiting family sometimes and not much more than that. As I have gotten older I have began to appreciate this day much more and what I feel it stands for. When my daughter was born this of course became more important and I have spent this day with family or friends. This Thanksgiving we did not travel, we did not dress up and barely cooked and yet I am still thankful. This week has highlighted something I am thankful for everyday even more, we have a roof over our head, food to eat and our health. I enjoyed spending time with my daughter with our new tradition; watching “Free Bird” hehe, eating a meal of any kind and a piece of pie!

I hope you are having a great Thanksgiving and have many blessings to be thankful for.
